Voluntary Code of Conduct for Authenticating Canadian Diamond Claims

The Canadian Diamond Code of Conduct brings integrity, trust, transparency of ethically sourced Canadian diamonds to the global industry and retail consumer. Signatories who abide by the Code demonstrate to both consumers and industry their commitment to ensure the authenticity of Canadian diamond claims.

Canadian Diamond Code of Conduct

The Code is rooted in the short history of the Canadian diamond industry. The Canadian Competition Bureau’s Enforcement Policy identified the need to bring integrity and transparency to the marketing of diamonds claiming to be of Canadian origin.

Work began in 2002 and the Code evolved from the collaborative efforts of a broad cross section of the industry, including the diamond mining sector, cutters and polishers, retailers, gemmological laboratories, consumer organizations, the Canadian Jewellers Association and Jewellers Vigilance Canada, the RCMP and other government stakeholders. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a department of the Canadian Federal Government, endorses this Code.

Members of all parts of the Canadian diamond industry, from mine to retail, voluntarily joined as Signatories to the Code.

The Code establishes a minimum auditable standard that enables the authentication of the Canadian origin of a diamond, purchased from a Code Signatory, based on records and a chain of warranties.

Who We Are

Our story is one of confidence in Canadian origin. The Code was created specifically to authenticate Canadian diamond origin.

The Code is administered by the Canadian Diamond Code Committee (CDCC), a non-profit volunteer industry body comprised of representatives from the mining, cutting and polishing, wholesalers, retailers, Jewellers Vigilance Canada, Canadian Jewellers Association, and a national consumer representative. Representatives from both the RCMP and NRCan are CDCC advisors.

The CDCC is responsible for the maintenance and administration of the Code. We will respond to authentication requests from consumers who have purchased a Canadian diamond from a Code Signatory by obtaining required information to track the diamond from the Signatory retailer to the mining company.
